OUR COMMITMENT

Our Commitment

to the community

One of the ways in which the company gives back to the community is through providing full scholarships to needy students within our cane catchment area. So far, the company has provided full scholarships to over twenty students, several of whom are currently in the universities in the country. Some of the students sponsored are currently working within the factory.

We also open our gates to schools, universities, and tertiary institutions to bring their students to tour the facilities and learn more about the production of sugar and the operations of a sugar factory among others.

Other CSR activities include fundraising for the many schools, orphanages and tertiary institutions within the four counties from where the company sources its cane viz Kisumu County, Nandi Hills, Kericho and Kakamega County.

We have currently proposed to partner with an NGO to provide educational scholarships for more than 150,000 students per year in day schools within the four counties.

Donations

We have a policy to donate to needy causes within its area of operations and further afield. The donations take the form of building materials for the construction of schools, churches and health centres.

Other donations go towards the improvement of learning institutions, books, learning materials etc.

The company normally provides encouragement materials and gifts to teachers and students in schools in the neighbourhood who had performed well in the national examinations.

During festive and religious holidays and ceremonies, we provide bedding, equipment for the disabled, kitchen utensils and other gifts for the needy.

to the environment

The vision of our company is to go green and invest in environmentally sustainable projects. All the companies are operating with valid NEMA licenses and we ensure that we are compliant with all the statutory requirements including Public Health licenses, OSHA certificates and requirements, Single Business Licences, Effluent Discharge License, etc.

The allied projects will ensure the company is fully environmentally sustainable both internally and externally as it will ensure zero waste.

  • We ensure that every year, we carry out an Annual Environmental Audit. The Audits are submitted to NEMA and the Authority follows up on any issues it feels necessary.
  • We have ensured all necessary Environmental Impact Assessments are carried out for our projects and NEMA licenses are procured before any new project is undertaken. We have licenses for sugar milling, co-generation, pulp and paper production, and ethanol manufacturing.
  • We also have various EIA licenses for boreholes which we have sunk. These boreholes also have Water Resources Management Authority (WRMA) licenses which cover the construction of abstraction works and use.
  • We carry out periodical water quality tests through reputable laboratories licensed by NEMA to perform the tests. These tests cover river water upstream of the factory, downstream of the factory and both raw and treated effluent. The effluent quality test results indicated that our companies are fully compliant with the NEMA standards for discharging effluent quality into the aquatic environment.
